Long Life and High Rate Performance Lithium Manganese Oxide Spinel Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Objective

Economical production of high performance cathode materials for lithium ion batteries with long service life and high rate performance

Approach

There are two routes for this type of materials production:

  1. Calcination with lithium source and microporous manganese carbonate from solvo-thermal synthesis.
  2. Solid state chemical reaction with manganese oxides and lithium salts.

Impact

Lithium manganese oxide is one of the two important cathode materials for electric vehicles. It has the advantages of cheap, environmentally friendly and safe operation properties. Its service life is a challenge. Our research both at lab and pilot plant scales shows that the service life and also rate performance (an important requirement for EV) can be tuned by carefully selecting the precursor chemicals and also the production technologies.
